Revision for Original Media

Hello, everyone -

Because of emails received during the past few days, the following will be revised for original media submissions:
  1. Projects of any length may be submitted.
  2. In the event that there are several long-form (30+ minutes) and short-form (up to 30 minutes) submissions, two categories will be constructed for review so that these two styles are not reviewed against one another.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Keep the submissions coming!

Cheers! Adam Tyma

Submissions for original visual media are now being accepted

Hello everyone!

The Media Studies Interest Group is excited to accept original movies, documentaries, or mediated artistic works for the CSCA 2011 Annual Conference in Milwaukee. If you intend to submit your original work, the following will be needed in your submission to CSCAMSIG@Gmail.Com:

  1. An original documentary, movie, or other mediated artistic work no more than 15 minutes in length and created in with the spirit and integrity of CSCA in mind (please see www.csca-net.org for conference and organization information).
  2. A 150-200 word abstract explaining the piece (submitted as either .PDF or .Doc format).
  3. A link to a publicly accessible file for the project to be viewed online (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo). To aid in the review process, DVDs or other hard media will not be accepted for submission or review.
  4. Submissions must be received by 10/6/2010.
In the event that there are four or fewer submissions, all submitted works may be shown at a showcase during the CSCA 2011 Conference. The number of submissions will determine whether or not a competitive jury or review will be held.

Communication and Civic Engagement: Challenge, Engage and Change

The Media Studies Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers and thematic panels on all aspects of media studies, including mass communication, media technology, media and culture, and other studies of media and mass communication for the 2010 CSCA Convention. In addition, we are soliciting original video submissions for screening at the convention as well as original and innovative ideas for special sessions.

Papers: The Media Studies Interest Group is seeking cutting edge research regarding all aspects of media studies, including mass communication, media technology, media and culture, popular culture, media theory, or other studies of media and mass communication for the 2010 conference. All paradigms and methodologies are welcome, and a top paper award will be assessed. Papers can follow APA, MLA, or Chicago styles, and they must be the original work of the author(s). Please send your submission to daniellemstern@gmail.com as two Microsoft Word (.doc or .rtf) files, with the first file containing a title page with author name(s) and contact information and the second file containing the text of the paper. All author-identifiers should be removed from the second file (excluding previous scholarly works cited in the paper and listed in the references section). The e-mail subject line should include the abbreviation CSCA and the title of the paper, and the e-mail text should include any requests for presentation aids (such as overhead projectors, TV/DVD player, etc.). Papers not meeting these submission guidelines will not be distributed for review.

Panels: The Media Studies Interest Group welcomes submissions of academic panel proposals, roundtable discussions, and other programming proposals exploring media studies. This year, the interest group specifically seeks panels or discussion sessions dealing with the conference theme of civic engagement—that is, how does media studies engage, respond to, and transform community and civic life? How is media being used socially and politically? How do new technologies impact civic discourse? How do media practitioners engage theory, and likewise how do media academics critically respond to media practices? Please send all submissions to daniellemstern@gmail.com as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .rtf) file, with the abbreviation CSCA in the subject line. Proposals need a title, brief abstract, any requests for presentation aids (such as overhead projectors, TV/DVD player, etc.), designated person in charge of the program, and names/contact information for each session participant (including whether or not the participants are CSCA members). Panel proposals include the 2010 CSCA Panel Proposal Request Form (available athttp://www.csca-net.org/).

Original Media Submissions: The Media Studies Interest Group welcomes submissions of original media. Documentaries of all lengths, fictional narratives or non-narratives, public service announcements, or other creative works of media are appropriate for submission, especially those that include themes of activism. Those interested in submitting should contact planner Danielle Stern at daniellemstern@gmail.com with a brief description of the media by September 25, 2009 to begin the submission process.

Awards: The Media Studies Interest Group presents three awards annually. The Samuel L. Becker Award is given for the top graduate student paper. The Becker Award includes an individual certificate, a cash award, and a traveling plaque that is housed at the recipient's graduate institution for the year. At the annual business meeting, the Media Studies Interest Group also presents awards for top faculty paper and top undergraduate student paper.

Submissions for all categories must be complete by October 2, 2009. Please note the earlier deadline for beginning the submission of original media.
